Continued Professional Development
I have been a professional geographer since 1974, and, by design and enthusiasm, constantly at the cutting edge of learning styles, research, and innovation throughout that time.
This CPD includes:
International research: cartographic research at the Institute of Geography, Bucharest 1974. Review published: The Geographical Journal.
Working with the Royal Geographical Society for 36 years since being awarded a Fellowship: eg expedition reports submitted to RGS eg Brtish Snaefellsjokul Expedition 1982.
Developing specialist and published methods of encouraging new ways of learning amongst pupils with special educational needs and those who are gifted, able, and talented. Published 1996.
Undertaking groundbreaking and nationally unique educational safety research. School and educational visits safety on a Research Fellowship from the Churchill Trust.
A classroom geography teacher for 31 years, including Head of Department for ten years.
Developing county-wide field-work projects in my early role as Secretary of the Essex Geographical Association. Working with all schools in the Essex LEA.
Being responsible for whole-school curriculum development for 1800 pupils. Chairing, managing Dept. and Faculty Development Plans, and monitoring implementation.
Undertaking polar and Arctic exploration; being an expedition leader. Greenland. Over 30 years expedition work in Iceland and Arctic Norway. Research into palaeo-and pro-glacial Tertiary glaciation.
Championing outdoor learning. National recognition and award in 1997.
Creating, setting-up, and managing a national Centre of Excellence for Primary School Outdoor Learning 2007, subsequently being one of the founder-signatories of the DCSF's LotC Outdoor Manifesto, 2008 [This Centre's project being managed by Barry Howard is one the Youth Sports' Trust's Case Study Schools for excellence in outdoor learning.]
Awarded 'Chartered Geographer' by the Royal Geographical Society in 2006
